After a long, wet winter the gardens and woodlands burst into life again. Here’s our pick of the highlights – and where and when to find them.
Drifts of daffodils
Our gardeners have planted thousands of daffodil bulbs over the years and now they create swathes of gold. The biggest displays can be found by following the circular route through the Long Garden, taking in the Blenheim Pavilion before dropping down the path to wander along Stable Bank. A stroll along the path that runs around the Parterre will reveal more daffodils nestled in the woodland fringes. Expected flowering: late February to mid April
Thousands of anemones
For this spring we've planted 20,000 Anemone coronaria ‘De Caen’ in the Long Garden for the first time. These pretty poppy-like flowers in mixed shades of red, blue-violet and white will mingle with 'Barrett Browning' daffodils amongst the topiary and statues. Expected flowering: mid April to late May
Spectacular spring bedding
The displays on the Parterre just get bigger and better. The six acre Parterre features 16 triangular beds and a huge half moon bed encircling the statue at the southern end - all of which are planted with spring bedding displays creating a carpet of colour. Expected flowering: mid March to mid May
Step into the woodlands to discover the light scent and carpet of colour created by our bluebells. The woodlands are liberally sprinkled with displays of delicate bluebells but for the most intense sea of hazy blue head to the Pheasantry and Fitness Trail area. Look out for cowslips, snowy wood anemones and dog violets too. Expected flowering: mid April to mid May
In the oriental inspired Water Garden you’ll find the dusky pinks of flowering cherries and creamy-white magnolias forming picture perfect reflections in the pools. If you head a little further a field and search out the Round Garden you’ll discover our unique fruit garden hopefully with apple and pear trees’ laden with delicate blooms. Expected flowering: March - May
All our flowers can be affected by the weather and despite our gardeners’ best efforts they don’t always bloom when we expect. If you’re making a special trip do call us on 01628 605 069 before hand and we’ll be delighted to give you the latest information.
