Low tide at Porth Oer, on the Llyn Peninsula, Wales

I’ll never forget where I first discovered my love for surfing.

I was at Whistling Sands (Porthoer) on the Llyn peninsula and there was a lovely sheltered clean break to surf. I’d been in the water for a while and found that if I positioned myself at the right part of the bay, I could catch the right-sized wave for me.

Perfect delivery

I’d almost had my fill when I caught a wonderful wave that delivered me almost to the steps of the beachside café – where I was able to have a bite to eat and enjoy an all-important paned (cuppa).

I’d recommend this beach to anyone coming here. As well as being perfect for surfing when the conditions are right, you can follow the coastal path – and when the tide’s out the unique sands offer recreation for all ages.
