The Herts and Essex Border Centre was founded in 1969 to promote and prosper the work of the National Trust. Our current membership of 400 is from the towns and villages in the surroundings of Bishop’s Stortford, Herts, and Harlow, Essex.
Membership is open to members and Volunteer Card holders of the National Trust.
Our nearest National Trust place is Hatfield Forest and, as well as financial support, our members support the Forest through such volunteer activities as stewarding the Shell House, nature surveys and woodland management.
In the past, we have been instrumental in obtaining a Local Heritage grant of almost £24,000 for the Forest.
In recent years, we have raised funds for educational equipment at Hatfield Forest, wild horses and a highland bull for Wicken Fen, oak benches for Coggeshall Grange Barn and a replacement wheelchair for Wimpole Hall. The Centre organises talks, outings, social events, a holiday and fundraising activities.
