Just a few miles from Aberdulais, up the Vale of Neath, is a unique network of waterfalls - so much so that it's known as Waterfall Country. It's an area overflowing with natural cascades within the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Here the rivers Mellte, Hepste, Pyrddin and Nedd Fechan wind their way down steep, tree-lined gorges that are as beautiful as they're spectacular.
Walking in Waterfall Country
Sgwd Gwladys: This is the shortest and easiest of several walking trails that encompass the waterfall network. It starts in the village of Pontneddfechan and is cared for by the Brecon Beacons National Park. From the Waterfall Centre, walk through a marked gate behind the Angel Inn opposite. The path was originally a tramway road linking the many early industries to the nearby canals. You'll need to allow 45 minutes each way.
Horseshoe Falls: Beyond Sgwd Gwladys lie the Horseshoe and Ddwli (Gushing) falls on the river Nedd Fechan. Returning to where the Nedd Fechan meets the Pyrddin, you cross the bridge and follow the steep path upstream through the ravine to the picnic area at Pont Melin Fach. From here you can return to Pontneddfechan. Allow one hour each way. Alternatively, you can press on northwards towards...
The Four Falls Trail: On this walk you'll join the Hepste and Mellte rivers and the three-tiered Clungwyn cluster of waterfalls. The trails are well waymarked and you can pick up easy-to-follow trail guides from the Tourist Information Centre at Aberdulais or from the Waterfall Centre. The guide will also take you to Sgwd Yr Eira - the famous Cascade of Snow where a narrow path actually takes you between the rockface and the torrent of falling water.
