Peter Dear
Head Ranger
Sissinghurst Castle

Peter Dear heads up the team of rangers and volunteer rangers on the Sissinghurst Castle estate. He has worked for us since he was 16 when he originally trained as an arboriculturist.

Here's a little bit more information about Peter and what he loves about his work.

How long have you worked at Sissinghurst Castle? 9 years

What's the best part of the estate? The Bridge over the Hammer Brook

Why's that? I love the movement of the rippling water and listening to the nightingales whilst watching dragonflies glide past.

What do you like about being a ranger?
Planning projects, carrying out the work and then stepping back to watch it develop.

What are your hobbies?
I love climbing and also do some woodcarving when I get the time. I also love being outside and enjoying the countryside.

What are the best and worst parts of your job?
The best part of my job is hedge laying and unless it's very wet and windy, I really dislike paperwork.
