Stowe parkland walk

This circular walk over the rolling hills, fields and groves of Stowe's peaceful parkland takes in a pond, a monument to a famous soldier and an ornate temple. Plus, there's the chance to spot wildlife including green woodpeckers.

Four-legged gardeners

Look out for the grazing sheep and longhorn cows that help to control fast-growing grasses and plants, ensuring the meadows are rich with swathes of wildflowers in the summer.

Start point

Stowe Parkland car park, Stowe, grid ref SP670377

Step 1

Start your walk from the parkland visitor car park beside Home Farm. Take the gravel track up the hill towards the main track.

Step 2

Turn left and walk up the main tarmac track. At the top of the track, look for signs of badgers' latrines and deer hoof prints, as they are both frequent nighttime visitors at Stowe.

Step 3

At the bridleway crossroads, go through the gates on the left and walk across a small field towards another gate. Go through the gate and immediately turn left to follow the track up to the Obelisk.

Step 4

At General Wolfe's Obelisk, enjoy the view of the parkland and the trees, which are planted in a regimental formation to conjure images of Wolfe's success on the battlefield. Follow the main grass path towards the riding areas, go through a gate and continue along the path as it heads down the field towards the stream.

Step 5

At the stream, follow the waymark, turning left along the grass path towards the Haymanger Pond. From here you can see a lovely view of the ridings and horses in the direction of Stowe Corner at Silverstone.

Step 6

At the Haymanger Pond, follow the boundary of the field. Go through the gate and continue to the remains of the Walled Garden.

Step 7

At the Walled Garden, continue on the grass path back down to your starting point at the parkland visitor car park.
