Belton by Design

The Perfect English Country House?

Begun for Sir John Brownlow in 1685, Belton was certainly designed to impress and across its 300 year history, each generation of the Brownlows left their creative mark.

The work of leading designers, artists and craftsmen is evidenced in the house; from Grinling Gibbons carvings and Edward Goudge plasterwork to one of the most significant historic silver collections in the country and the second largest library held by the National Trust.  Relatively compact it may be, but the quality of its collection, its setting in 36 acres of formal gardens and 1300 acres of deer park mean that Belton House is regarded as the most complete example of an English country house.

In 2014 we'll be celebrating the importance of design at Belton through a broad range of events and activities, from Meet the Expert talks to Design Days for families.

A very special collection comes to Belton

The Silver Trust brings Downing Street to Belton

This August we’re delighted to be hosting The Silver Trust collection of contemporary silver, normally used at 10 Downing Street. Belton’s dining room will be graced by some of the finest and most intriguing silverware created in recent years.

Entry to the exhibition is free with a house ticket and opens for viewing from 10.30 Wednesday - Sunday with last admission at 4.30pm. Don’t miss this very special opportunity to view a remarkable collection, seldom on public display.

A spoonful of silver

A Spoonful of Silver
This exclusive collection of silver spoons has been produced by members of Contemporary British Silversmiths to run alongside the Silver Trust exhibition, and is on show in the Breakfast Room throughout August.

The spoons showcase the skill and excellence of some of the best silversmiths working in Britain today, some of whom are also represented in the Silver Trust's Downing Street collection.

The individual spoons are available for sale to the public from 5 August.

The Belton Beaker

Artist in Residence

Visit the House this season and enjoy the Studio Silver Today exhibition by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths which showcases the work of artist silversmith, Angela Cork.

Angela will be in the mansion most Saturdays, working on a silver beaker inspired by Belton's staircase. This unique piece of silver will be given away in a prize draw at the end of the year.
