Many people care about their food miles.....have you ever considered your drink miles?

A chance advert has led to a new family business specialising in converting Yorkshire grown fruit into batches of tasty wines for sale in the stables shop at Beningbrough.

Sarah Ironside and her family have an 8 acre plot just outside Stockton on the Forest, York, where they have worked hard developing the road, path and greenhouse infrastructure and planting fruit bushes and trees to start a plant nursery business.  A chance advert in the Yorkshire Post led to a different venture....eventually.

'Winery For Sale
Established nearly 25 years producing quality fruit wines'

Yorkshire Country Wines had spent the first 23 years of its existence operating from vaulted cellars in a 19th Century Flax Mill on the banks of the River Nidd, in the tiny village of Glasshouses, near Pateley Bridge. Here visitors could sip wines in the tearooms overlooking the river, watching Dippers and Wagtails and catching the odd blue flash of Kingfishers. The owners were ready to slow down and sell but wanted to pass on their lifetime of work developing the product and brand. Sarah replied to the advert but didn't hear anything for a while, it turns out her writing was so bad the owners responded to other applicants whilst they deciphered the details.

Fate played its part and once seen, Sarah fell for the idea of turning local fruit into a wine to be distributed in the neighbourhood from established outlets including the National Trust. A busy few months ensued building knowledge and experience and setting up a new location for the winery business. Two years have now passed and the company is ready to launch new branding showing the family name for this developing artisan product.

Their name and branding will match the nursery business name and marks a new chapter in the company's history.

So, I hear you say, when can we try some? As the first in a series of meet the supplier days at the stables shop at Beningbrough, Sarah and her Ironside Yorkshire Country Wines will be offering samples on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 January 2014 11am - 3.30pm. What's more entry is free not only to National Trust members but for that weekend only, York residents on production of a valid York card.

If you've not stepped in a National Trust shop for a while then you might just be surprised. Many of the products are unique to the area from specialist local producers and craftsmen. From jams and chutneys to wines and beers, there is a great deal of Yorkshire available for sale in the shop for that perfect gift or treat to take home.
