Saturday 9 - Sunday 10 August 2014, Crow Park, Keswick

The first Derwent Water Regatta for 200 years was held on the lake last year and was such a success that we're looking forward to another weekend of stone-skimming, boating and bathtub racing.

Larking about on the lake

There's a huge range of outdoor activities on offer, so there's bound to be something you'll want to try. Whether it's family taster sessions in kayaks, a chance to build your own coracle or a motorised trip in a group around the lake, there are lots of ways to dip your toes into having fun on the lake. If you fancy a little more adventure you could have a go sailing a catamaran, a Viking Long Boat or sailing dingy

Long tradition of eccentricity

‘King Pocky’ or, more properly, Joseph Pocklington, bought Derwent Island in 1778, where he built a grand mansion and several follies. He devised a series of madcap regatta activities on Derwent Water along with a fair on Crow Park for spectators. Teams of people rowed, sailed and swam around the island. The festivities would reach their climax with a mock attack of the island, with Pocklington firing cannon towards the local invaders.

Meanwhile, back on dry land

Don't fancy getting out on the water? On Crow Park there will be lots of stalls offering activities and competitions from lots of local businesses and charities. If you refuse to grow up or are a little on the young side you can try your hand at our free ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 ¾’ activities, try out our slack line, or even become a champion stone skimmer on our custom-made stone skimming obstacle course. And don't forget to listen out for the cannon as it fires to signal the start of races or try to find ‘King Pocky’ as he wanders the field. Definitely make time to watch The Big Adventure performed by Theatre by the Lake Youth Theatre at 11am and 1pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

Join the madness

If you have your own boat you can join Flotilla (Saturday 9 August, 12.15pm), and the Parade of Sail with best dressed boat competition (Sunday 10 August, 12.30pm) with prizes for the best themed boat and crew.
