Ennerdale Water looking across at Great Borne

The Buttermere valley is isolated and beautiful. It rolls down from the top of Honister Pass and out towards the coast in a chain of three lakes: Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater. Wainwright’s favourite fell, Haystacks, marks the head of the valley, and the exhilarating ridge walk west from there traces the high ground with dramatic views down into Buttermere and beyond.

Ennerdale is located on the western flanks of the Lake District and noted for its wilderness qualities, being only accessible by road from the western end the valley retains a sense of remoteness and offers peace, quiet and solitude, often hard to find these days.

Mountain safety advice

Mountains can be wonderful and challenging places, but without careful planning, clothing and equipment, and an understanding of their dangers, they can be unforgiving.
