To find out more about the history of James Wyatt’s masterpiece, marvel at the lavish interior, hear stories of the family that lived here, and explore the extensive world below stairs…why not take a guided tour?
The house is open at various times from March until September and is available to see by guided tour. Tours last approximately 1 hour and take in all of the main reception rooms in the mansion, as well as the basement where the servants lived and worked. Check our Opening Times to find out when the house is open. As a listed building, there is no lift! Please talk to our reception staff if you are concerned about moving around the house and we will make arrangements accordingly.
On the tour, encounter lavishly decorated rooms in early 19th century style, including the grand oval Saloon which is considered the focal point of the whole house. The tour also ventures up the beautiful 'imperial' staircase, where you can see the ornate State Bedroom, which was decorated for a visit of King George IV and rarely used, so it has stayed in fantastic condition. The tour concludes in the vast basement, which gives an intriguing insight to the hidden world beneath the stairs, described as the engine which runs the house above.
Family and social history
The house was built for the first Earl of Belmore who employed the popular architect James Wyatt to design the building. Our informative guides will be able to tell you all about the various craftsmen that worked on the property during the 1790s as well as the subsequent generations of the Lowry-Corry family who have shaped the house and estate to the current day.
