Get active and explore the outdoors at Castle Ward on our new multi-purpose trail network.
The 11.5 miles (18.5km) of new sustainable trails have been created in addition to upgrading the existing 9.5 miles (15.5km) producing an overall network of 21 miles (34km) of all ability, pedestrian, cycling and horse riding trails. Visitors can now discover areas of the demesne which were previously inaccessible.
The five trails all start at the main trailhead in the farmyard. Users can choose walks and cycles of varying length and challenge including the Shore Trail, Castle Trail and Boundary Trail. A separate and new horse parking area is sited off the main avenue behind the ticketing admission hut. This gives access to the Hoof Trail which has been designed specifically for horses.
A new car park by the shore has improved access to the trails, temple water and the farmyard. It gives visitors the choice to avoid the steep hill toward the main parking area and park close to the trial head. Here visitors can pick up interpretation about the trails, buy some refreshments or take a rest after a long walk.
In the farmyard Clearsky Adventure Centre offer many outdoor recreational activities to enhance your experience on the trails. Kayaks and bicycles are available to hire daily including a new wide range of all ability bicycles.
We hope to welcome many new visitors onto our trails. They give everyone the opportunity to explore the outdoors at Castle Ward while ensuring that existing wildlife habitats are protected and the heritage landscapes are preserved.
