Cliveden’s spectacular country estate overlooks the River Thames and is open daily for most of the year. There are acres of woodlands to explore and a woodland play trail hidden amongst the trees.

On this family-friendly route, children can let their imaginations run wild and discover for themselves what the woods have to offer.

Woodland car park, grid ref: SU909832


From the woodland car park follow the path signposted ‘picnic and viewpoint’. Go through the large kissing gate on your right and continue. The elephant and bear wood carvings will be on your right. Follow the route to the left past the picnic benches.


Continue down the slope and past the carved wooden Cliveden snails. If you look out at the viewing area ahead you can see views of Berkshire countryside and the River Thames below. You can also see Cliveden House Hotel to your right in the distance. Turn right after this view point and follow the path along the cliff top.

Continue to follow the main path. If you take a viewing detour please proceed with caution and ensure you return to the main path.

At the blue marker post, turn right onto an avenue of lime trees.


Here you can make a detour to your left by following signs to Clive's Den where children can imagine and explore what the woods have to offer. When you have finished you little adventure retrace your steps to the avenue of lime trees. At the end of the avenue, turn right when you reach the junction. Shortly, you'll see a sign to the Play Trail on your right.

This avenue, known as Green Drive, leads you back to the woodland car park. At its end the avenue will narrow. Take the kissing gate on your right. Head straight through the central small walkway with fields on your left before entering a sheltered woodland area back to the woodland car park.

This circular walk follows grass and stone studded earth footpaths through the woods. Largely level terrain with occasional gentle slopes. Suitable for all-terrain buggies. May get muddy in wet weather. Please note, Play Trail activities are situated off the paths. Dogs are welcome in our woodlands

How to get here

Cliveden, Taplow, Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire, SL1 8NS
By train

Taplow station 1.3 miles (2km) (not Sunday); Burnham 3 miles (4.8km).

By road

1.3 miles (2km) north of Taplow; leave M4 at junction 7 on to A4, or M40 at junction 4 onto A404 to Marlow and follow brown signs for the woodland car park. Postcode for Sat Nav: SL1 8NS.

By ferry

Hire a boat in Maidenhead or Windsor and travel to Cliveden on the River Thames. 24-hour mooring fee £9. Mooring available for half a mile downstream from Cliveden boathouse.

By bicycle

Approximately one mile (1.6km) north of Taplow on Cliveden Road.

  • Car parking at the woodland car park.
  • Please note there are no refreshment facilities in the woodlands.
