Coniston pier a great place to start any day out

Coniston Water is at the heart of things to do in this lovely area. However active you want to be don't miss out on seeing the views from a water-based perspective.

You can relax and take a cruise on SY 'Gondola', get off and walk at several optional jetties or use the lake as more of a work-out by canoeing or kayaking. However you choose to go the combination of water and scenery around makes a great way to see it all differently.

See some ideas below.

Check our google map of ways to enjoy this area with that great combination of lake and trail.

Enjoy 'Gondola'

Experience our very own beautifully restored steam yacht Gondola, now greener as it uses eco-friendly fuel in its lovely old steam engine. There is a charge for NT members but it goes straight back to help our work here.

Sail & trail

Afloat or on dry land - there's equal fun to be had.

Cruise, sail, canoe, kayak on Coniston Water
'Gondola' leaves from Coniston Pier and the adjacent boating centre is where you can hire and launch boats; you can also launch canoes and kayaks from public access points round the lake. Be prepared for cold water and follow good safety practice, and before you go ashore make sure you’re on public access land as much of the lakeshore is private.

Link a walking trail with 'Gondola'
Why not combine a sail on Coniston Water with a walk, trails are accessible from jetties around the lakeshore on both the eastern and western sides and make for a very enjoyable day out.

Gondola walks

The Gondola gives the option to mix a sail and a walk, with jetties in several places you can choose from a few different options.

Arthur Ransome's children's tale was set on a fictitious lake inspired partly by Coniston Water. See if you can recognise any of his famous places.
