Note: Cragside is a place of adventure and is not without its own perils. The main hazards are vehicles, uneven ground, slippery steps, sheer drops and water. Help us to look after you by wearing sturdy shoes and taking care when walking in the woodland.

Cragside house

Visit the home of Tyneside industrialist, Lord Armstrong. The first house to be lit by hydroelectricity, it's one of the most modern and surprising houses of its time. Look out for the marvellous marble fireplace.

Gift shop

Visit our gift shop which has a fantastic selection of gifts, books, local foods and wines. Our plant centre offers a wide variety of plants and decorative garden gifts.

The Formal Garden

The Formal Garden, situated across the valley from the house is filled with seasonal bedding, trees and shrubs. Explore the magnificent Orchard House filled with fruit trees.

Other information

Time for tea

  • An average visit lasts around 3 hours, although there are things to keep you busy for a full day.
  • Coach parties welcome - there is parking for five coaches 350 yards from the House, 150 yards from the Visitor Centre.

Tea Rooms

Enjoy local seasonal dishes created in our kitchen and served in the Tea Rooms at the Visitor Centre. Hot food is available between 12noon and 2.30pm. Call in and enjoy a morning coffee, lunch or afternoon tea.

The Cragside Hopper

Wait at the stop, then hop on the hopper

To help all visitors get around, we provide a free minibus service with wheelchair access, the Cragside Hopper. It runs a continuous circuit between the Visitor Centre, Formal Garden car park, House and coach park.
