Competitions & offers

1. Nominations are welcome from residents of the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man excluding employees and the immediate families of the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine, their agents and anyone else professionally connected with the awards.
2. Nominations from anyone under 16 years require parent/guardian consent.
3. Nominations should be made via email to octavia.hillawards@nationaltrust.org.uk or postal format submitted to the National Trust’s central office marked Octavia Hill Awards, National Trust, Heelis, Swindon, SN2 2NA.
4. You can nominate more than one person/group but each nomination must be done on a separate nomination form.
5. All entries must be completed on the official awards nomination form.
6. The awards open on 19 October 2011 and the closing date for receipt of nominations is midnight 31 January 2012.
7. The awards are given for work undertaken between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2011.
8. There are six Octavia Hill Awards, one for each of the following categories: Growing Hero, Natural Hero, Inspirational Hero, The People’s Campaigner, Green Space Guardians and a ‘Love Places’ Award (a specific award for National Trust volunteers). 9. There is no cash or alternative award available, in whole or in part, and the award will be awarded directly to the winning nominees.
10. First stage nominations will be selected by representatives from the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine from all the nominations. Second stage nominations will be viewed by a selected panel of judges to shortlist. The panel of judges is appointed by the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine. There will be at least one independent representative/judge sitting on each panel in each stage of the nominations process.
11. The representatives’ and judges’ decisions are final. No correspondence will be entered into.
12. Nominations will be judged on the following criteria: has the nominee taken a creative or innovative approach to a problem? Are they tenacious and have not given up, even when faced with major obstacles? Has their work brought benefits to others (e.g. community farm/allotments providing food for others, a nice space giving people place to go)? Have they worked with the wider community to achieve their goals and does their work engage the wider public? Does their work have a specific positive impact for wildlife? How long-term is it, have they worked in a sustainable way? And is there anything they’ve done to “go the extra mile” – have they done something truly amazing, for example conducted a big fundraising effort to finance their project?
13. There will be 18 shortlisted nominations (3 in each category) which will be put forward for a public vote (between March and the end of April 2012). Details of the nominations will be available on the website.
14. When voting opens it will be restricted to one vote per household, per category.
15. Those shortlisted may be asked for additional material if necessary to meet the judges' criteria. They will also be encouraged to make a short video film about their work to be used on the National Trust website  to help in the public vote. This can be a simple film and the National Trust can advise on how to make it. Copyright on all video material will be held by the National Trust.
16. The nominated individuals or groups, or those nominating them may be required to participate in publicity work, including promotion in the media and through online and print formats produced by the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine. By entering the awards you agree and provide consent to take part in such publicity with no further recompense.
17. Please note that, if you are: a participant under 12 years old, a parent or legal guardian must explicitly consent on your behalf to publication of your personal information and must agree to accompany you to any publicity events; or a participant between 12 and 16 years old, you are agreeing to participate in such publicity and publication of your personal information in the event that you are shortlisted for a prize. If you are in any doubt as to the implications of providing such consent please ask a parent or legal guardian to explain and ensure that they consent to your entry to the awards on the basis of these terms and conditions.
18. Entry in the awards signifies acceptance of these terms and conditions.
19. The National Trust and Countryfile Magazine reserves the right to withhold, change or cancel the awards in the event of non-compliance with these rules. The National Trust and Countryfile Magazine also reserves the right at their discretion to amend the rules at any time. Should this happen a notice will be displayed on these webpages.
20. No responsibility is accepted by the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine for entries lost, delayed, misdirected, incomplete or which cannot be entered for any technical or other reason. Proof of delivery of entry is not proof of receipt.
21. By submitting a nomination, you grant the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine a non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, worldwide licence to republish your nomination details and those of the person you are nominating, limited to name, organisation, (if applicable), and town, plus extracts from your application, in electronic format and hard copy.
22. The National Trust and Countryfile Magazine may change its advertised panel of expert judges in the event of circumstances outside of its control.
23. The judges reserve the right to transfer entrants into more suitable categories if necessary.
24. The award winners will be announced in Countryfile Magazine, at an awards ceremony in June 2012, and through general communications channels including the National Trust website and wider media.
25. As part of the awards process nominators will supply the National Trust and Countryfile Magazine with contact details of their nominee, and this information will be used to contact them regarding a) additional information and b) to inform them that they are an award winner.
26. Any personal information, including, without limitation, your names, address, telephone number and/or email address will be used i) in connection with the awards ii) as set out in these terms and conditions. Personal data will not be disclosed to any third party, except to publicise the awards and for the purpose of fulfilling the award where applicable.
