An intimate Arts and Crafts style family home and complementary gardens

Discover the cherished family home of Noel Goddard Terry, owner of the famous chocolate-making firm Terry’s of York. The house was designed by architect Walter Brierley in the Arts and Crafts style and is complemented by four acres of gardens, designed by George Dillistone. A hidden gem - only a stone's throw away from York City Centre.

The house has selected rooms displayed to give glimpses into the family home and working chocolate factory. The garden includes yew-hedged garden rooms, bowling green, wilderness gardens and plants for every season; it is also an oasis for wildlife.

Note: The house is also used as regional offices for the National Trust in Yorkshire.

Garden delights

Flowers in bloom at the former home of Terry Goddard close to York

No matter what season, there's always something new to see in the gardens here. From arrays of tulips in the spring, to scented lavender in summer, orange canopies in autumn and snow dusted lawns in winter.

Sports and chocolate

Sports and chocolate don't seem like a marriage made in heaven, but for Terry's chocolate factory, the sports teams were a key way of keeping their workers fit and healthy whilst creating a family atmosphere in the firm. Camaraderie and loyalty grew up out of these teams - some of which were competitive even at a county level. Find out more about Terry's and sports in the new displays in the house and vote for which teams you would have joined
