The Treasurer’s House has made a successful debut at the Yorkshire in Bloom awards this year, coming away with a Silver Gilt award.

It was described by the judging panel as 'a superb oasis in the middle of bustling York’ and the team of volunteers that manage the garden are delighted by their success.

Stephen Hodges, gardener at Treasurer's who manages the volunteer team, said:
'We’re all thrilled with the award. We’ve always felt the garden was one of York’s best kept secrets and hopefully the recognition will help to show inspire people to discover this wonderful garden, tucked away just behind the Minster.'

The garden was commended by judges who praised the team’s environmental approach. As Stephen explains:
'We are very much an organic site and at all times we use hand tools instead of power tools. Wildlife is encouraged and we use produce from the garden in the tearoom, to including anything from chives to quince on the menu.'

The judges were also impressed that on top of the pristine appearance of the garden, it is frequently used and enjoyed not only by visitors to the house, but it is also a place where many functions events and weddings can be held.

Stephen continued:
'The volunteer team do such a sterling job, and I’m thrilled that their dedication and hard work has been rewarded. But even our small team sometimes needs a little help – during the October half term we need to plant over 1000 blue allium bulbs and will be calling on our visitors to help.

In the past we’ve had mass-planting events for tulips and daffodils and now we want to make sure we have a stunning display in spring to start the new season. Anyone that wants to come and help is more than welcome.'

The bulb planting days will take place throughout the October half term, from 22-30 October (closed Friday) – it’s free to get involved and anyone that does plant a bulb will be kept in informed as to when their bulbs will come into bloom.
