Victorian Life

School trip to Hughenden, Buckinghamshire

Our day exploring the house and gardens is excellent for children following the option Victorian Britain. In our discovery sessions, students handle artefacts and learn how to use them. Activities based in the garden and house involve role play and story-telling around contrasting themes of rich and poor, work and pleasure, men and women, and past and present.

The Mystery Visit: who lives here?

Designed for Key Stage 2, students. Become detectives for the day and investigate the lives of the people who lived here. Servant or master, rich or poor, young or old, men or women, which one would you choose? The day’s activities are designed to give a background of historical content in which students can use their imaginations. Ideal for creative writing.

Designed to enhance AS and A2 modules in English and history, we can provide tailor-made tours to meet your individual needs. These talks are great for providing background information on Victorian England in literature, history, and architecture. Our intriguing WW2 story provides the opportunity to explore local and oral history, as well as sources, and new research.

Story-telling in the walled garden

We encourage schools to organise their own days using our woodland trails, expansive parkland, and formal and walled gardens.

Schools have used the grounds for special days such as story-telling, teddy bear picnics and orienteering in the woodland, mapping and following trails in the parkland. You are welcome to use our picnic orchard and study base during your visit.
