New sessions added in 2015.

Join us for enriching experiences to extend pupils' learning. We have a great choice of learning sessions and activities for key stages one and two. Each session has clear learning outcomes and is cross curricular. Our facilitated workshops and self-led activities are specifically designed to complement the new 2014 curriculum.

The perfect outdoor classroom

Learning in our gardens

With acres of beautiful parkland and woodland, we focus on the outdoor environment to engage pupils with their learning. Pupils can learn about the world around them by exploring our outdoor spaces.

EYFS outdoor adventure

Join us for a day of learning especially for EYFS children. Investigate the garden for bugs, naming and identifying them. Explore the textures of creepy crawlies and make a butterfly feeder to take home.

With help from club Devon Orienteering we have brand new courses running through our wood and parkland, including varying difficulty levels.

Upper KS1 and Lower KS2 - Science

Explore the woods of Knightshayes to discover the small worlds of mini-beasts. Hunt for bugs and find out why we need to protect their habitats.

Explore the kitchen garden to learn how plants grow and what they need to survive. Discover how to keep healthy by making good food choices. Create a seed head friend to take home.

Upper KS1 and Lower KS2 - D+T, Science, Art

Learn about the life-cycle of insects, find out what they need to survive and then design and build a home for them. Pupils can use their knowledge and creativity to make a bug house using a range of materials.

£1.50 per pupil.

Lower KS2 - Art, Literacy

Learn the myths and legends associated with our woodland. Use natural materials to create tree spirits and record your artwork using drawings and photography. Then turn your art into characters to be used in literacy projects and stories.

£2.00 per pupil.

Explore Knightshayes Court

New for 2015 are learning sessions based at our mansion. Discover the stories of the house and the people who lived and worked at Knightshayes.These sessions focus on the local history aspect of the new curriculum.

Ks2 - history, literacy
Join us to learn more about Knightshayes during the First World War. Take a tour of our new exhibition and house. Explore artefacts from the era and uncover the stories of the soldiers and nurses who called Knightshayes home from 1915-1918.

The Big Draw 2015


Ks1, 2 & 3

For the second year Knightshayes is inviting local schools to join our huge community art project. Get inspiration from our First World War artefacts and then add your own drawings or writing to our huge Big Draw community autograph book. Take part at Knightshayes during a free workshop or let us know if you would like a free drawing pack.

Upper Ks1 and Ks2 – history and art

Learn about the eccentric and talented designer William Burges. Tour Knightshayes Court to find his repeating pattern designs and discover their links with nature. Design and make a block print in the Burges style to take home.

Victorian Christmas traditions

Upper Ks1 and Ks2

Discover the Victorian origins of many of our Christmas traditions. Tour our beautifully decorated house to see how Christmas was celebrated in a grand country home. Make a Victorian inspired Christmas decoration to take home.

Upper Ks1 and Ks2 - history

Discover how Knightshayes came to be and it’s links with Tiverton. Use different source materials to find out about the staff who made Knightshayes a great estate, from the scullery maid to the pony boy. Explore Knightshayes Court, dress up and try your hand at servant tasks.

Artefact handling

Borrow our handling collection to learn more about domestic life at Knightshayes. Pupils will be able to handle objects from the past and use their powers of deduction to discover what our artefacts could be.

This session will focus on: History, literacy, thinking skills and art.

£10 for half day loan of collection.

Education group membership

Education group membership, currently between £41 and £101 per year depending on school size, entitles the school to free admission to the property and other National Trust places.
