Facts

  • The National Trust protects about a quarter of the Lake District National Park.
  • There are 145 seriously eroded upland paths in the Lake District which will take about 10 years to repair and cost about £5 million.
  • The National Trust owns 20 golf courses

'For the benefit of the Nation' both concludes and sums up our charitable purpose . The primary way we deliver this benefit is by giving access, in the broadest sense, to the buildings, land and habitats that we look after.

We aim to open up our resources as much as we can without compromising their care. Physical access, which meets the different recreational interests of visitors, is balanced against nature conservation and environmental needs.

Educational access can be given through creative projects and through volunteering, people can participate in the work of the properties. At a local level access to jobs and economic development brings the Trust, communities, government departments and other organisations together to find practical, sustainable solutions.
