Devon's delights

Time Place
Morning Coleton Fishacre House & Garden
Afternoon Greenway
Extra day? Saltram

Morning
Begin your day at Coleton Fishacre House and Garden, which is situated on a beautiful stretch of the South Devon coastline. The stylish and decorative house was designed in the 1920s for Rupert and Lady Dorothy D’Oyly Carte who created the luxuriant garden around it. The garden has year-round interest from early spring flowers to glorious autumn colours. In the garden visitors will also come across a gazebo, water features and a fine collection of rare and exotic plants.

Lunch?
Either bring a picnic basket or enjoy lunch in the Trust tea-room.

Afternoon
After lunch make your way to Greenway garden. Greenway is a glorious woodland garden on the banks of the River Dart, renowned for rare half-hardy plants and carpets of native wild flowers: a real life ‘secret garden’ awaiting discovery. Green ways to Greenway: travel by river, bicycle or public transport to help protect the rare tranquillity of this lovely place, and receive reduced admission charges.

Extra day?
If you are planning a longer stay in Devon you should also take the time to visit Saltram. "Saltram is one of the treasures of the National Trust", wrote Simon Jenkins in his series on England’s Best Houses for The Times. This perfectly positioned survival of a George II mansion is the result of centuries of extravagance and sophistication. It features some of Robert Adam’s finest interiors and an exceptional collection of paintings. Also of interest are the Great Kitchen, a gallery of local art in the chapel, and an orangery in the garden. Saltram starred as Norland Park, the Dashwood family home, in the film 'Sense & Sensibility'.
