A day out in Derbyshire

Time Place
Morning Kedleston Hall
Afternoon Sudbury Hall & Museum of Childhood
Extra day? Calke Abbey

Morning
Explore the gardens and historic parkland at Kedleston. Wander around the beautiful open parkland, with lakes, cascades and a Lakeside Fishing Room. If you visit in June, you can see a spectacular display of azaleas and rhododendrons. You can also discover the splendid 18th-century Classical Hall.

Lunch?
You can stop for a delicious home cooked lunch at Kedleston Hall's restaurant or enjoy light lunches and afternoon tea in the Coach House tea-room at Sudbury Hall.

Afternoon
Head west out of Derby, to Sudbury Hall and the Museum of Childhood. Sudbury Hall is a fascinating 17th-century family country house. You can see the magnificent 138 foot Long Gallery or discover life below stairs in the 1930s kitchen. At the Museum of Childhood you’ll see the toys our great-grandparents loved and perhaps take part in a Victorian school lesson.

Extra day?
If you’re staying in Derbyshire for the weekend, you should also visit nearby Calke Abbey. The Abbey is a unique great house in decline: a world where clocks stood still in the 1920s. You can explore the family’s wonderful collections of paintings and birds in the house. The walled gardens are spectacular during spring and summer and the orangery has been restored.

When can you go?
Before visiting a property, we strongly advise that you check its opening times, as properties open on different days and at different times. This information is detailed on the individual property pages, which you can search for by finding a place to visit.
