Archaeology seeks to understand how people lived in the past by studying the ways they interacted with the natural and built environment. Human influence has moulded virtually the entire landscape we know today; its impact upon National Trust properties and estates is both important and revealing.
More than 45,000 archaeological sites are recorded in the Trust's own Sites and Monuments database. This is the largest privately owned collection in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. But these don't exist in a vacuum, and our archaeologists get involved in the management of all the Trust's historical and natural places.
