The National Trust Sites and Monuments Record (NTSMR) is a resource and repository of information about the archaeology and historic landscapes under National Trust care. It is sophisticated computerised database which supports an extensive paper archive.
The NTSMR has a wide scope, covering:
- All periods, from Neolithic settlements to Second World War monuments.
- Sites of international, national, regional or local interest, whether World Heritage Sites, Scheduled Monuments or locally defined Conservation Areas.
- Traditional archaeology such as Roman forts, castles, burial sites and buildings.
- Agricultural sites that are still in use today like farmsteads and vernacular buildings.
- The remains of industries such as charcoal burning, mining or quarrying.
- Military sites such as Civil War defences or the Cold War installations such as radar stations or the remains at Orford Ness.
The computerised database features:
- The monument's description, history and associated archives.
- Work or surveys that have taken place.
- Evaluation of the monument's importance, condition and management.
The supporting archive comprises:
- Plans of sites (in both paper and digital formats).
- Maps of the surrounding historic landscape (to place the individual monuments into context).
- Over 30,000 slides and photos.
- Historic landscape reports for many of the National Trust properties.
- Specialist reports, such as excavation, measured surveys and finds reports.
