The National Trust cares for over 700 miles of coastline in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, nearly 10 per cent of the total mileage.
Under our protection are some of the most beautiful and iconic stretches of coast in the UK. Our remit also extends to built structures of significant maritime interest, such as lighthouses, harbours, and past military and archaeological sites.
Our pioneering Neptune Coastline Campaign, 40 years old in 2005, continues to help save beautiful coastal locations from development and promote access for all where possible.
Conservation of our coast is about managing change and finding a sustainable way forward. Erosion and sea-level rise, linked to climate change, make our coastal properties among the most dynamic in our care. Our Coastal Policy explains how we want to manage the coast in the future.
