The National Trust owns or has on loan in its care 224 animal-drawn vehicles.
This is certainly the largest British collection in public or museum ownership, and it includes a number of very important examples.
Properties with carriages and other animal-drawn vehicles Some are important because of their rarity (even uniqueness in a few cases), some for their quality, and many because they are in original condition.
Outstanding among them are the Britzschka Chariot at Shugborough in Staffordshire, the state coach of the Earls of Powis at Powis Castle in Wales and the Lucy Coach at Charlecote Park in Warwickshire.
Other interesting examples of the coachbuilders’ art are at Erddig in Wales and Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, while a major collection has been formed at Arlington Court in Devon.
