The National Trust welcomes the principle of science being the basis of bovine TB control, as has been adopted by Defra in Monday's announcement about tackling the disease.
Peter Nixon, Director of Conservation for the Trust, says:
'Control of this disease is a top priority. We have always said that bovine TB control has to be based on science, not emotion.
In the absence of scientific support for culling badgers, the right course of action must be to focus on the other measures, in particular a better understanding of cattle to cattle transmission, the implementation of effective biosecurity, and the development of effective vaccines, especially in the short term, for badgers.
The science based measures proposed by Defra will be key in the fight against this disease which continues to blight the lives of farmers.
We will do what we can to work with the farming community, including many of our own tenant farmers, to help reduce the incidence of the disease.'
