Morning Enjoy the walled garden at Wallington along with the 18th-century landscape, influenced by 'Capability' Brown. The house opens after lunch, so take this opportunity to try the restaurant before viewing the house, or heading off to Cragside.
Lunch? Alternatively, enjoy lunch at Cragside in the cosy Stables Restaurant – if it’s fine, you can enjoy the sunshine sitting outside in the courtyard.
Afternoon The extraordinary house at Cragside was built by the first Lord Armstrong in the 19th century and was the first in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. The surrounding forest garden can be explored by following a driveway and stopping off at different points along the way.
Extra day? If you’re planning to stay in the region a little longer, take a picnic and spend a day exploring Hadrian’s Wall, starting from Housesteads Fort, near Bardon Mill. This is one of Rome’s most northerly outposts, built when the Roman Empire was at its peak. Housesteads Fort is one of 13 permanent bases along the wall and one of the best preserved. Don’t forget to take strong walking shoes, and dress for all weathers.
NB: Housesteads Fort is owned by the National Trust and maintained and managed by English Heritage. An EH admission charge applies if you wish to look around the remains.
When can you go? Before visiting a property, we strongly advise that you check its opening times, as properties open on different days and at different times. This information is detailed on the individual property pages, which you can search for by finding a place to visit.
