A short stroll from Stourhead House, lying in secluded privacy in the adjacent valley, is one of the finest landscape gardens in the world, quite often referred to as ‘Paradise’.

Temple of Apollo
Ceremonies can take place at the Temple of Apollo. The temple, with its graceful stonework and intimate location, provides a serene setting for beautiful, classic ceremonies.
The panoramic vista of the garden from the temple is unparalleled, and was once described by Horace Walpole as ‘one of the most picturesque scenes in the world’. These breathtaking views create a stunning backdrop for wedding photographs.
Conservation in 2009
The Temple of Apollo will be undergoing conservation work from May 2009 onwards. As a result of this weddings will take place between January 1st and April 30th 2009 only. The Temple will reopen for weddings in 2010.

Inspired by the ruins of Baalbec in Lebanon, the temple was built in 1765 and dedicated to the sun god, Apollo, who in Greek mythology helped gardens to flourish. From his hill-top position, Apollo has been observing the Stourhead landscape for nearly 250 years, silently guarding his tranquil paradise.
Like the other garden temples at Stourhead, the temple was built to enhance the views from around the garden. It was also used by the Hoare family for entertaining guests and for private family picnics.

When can civil wedding ceremonies be held at Stourhead?
Ceremonies can take place daily, year round except Christmas day.
Receptions
The picturesque courtyard village of Stourton lies just 50 yards from the garden, at the heart of the Stourhead estate. Within the village walls are the Spread Eagle Inn and Stourton Memorial Hall, both excellent venues for your reception.
Accessibility
The shuttle bus service can be used for one return journey to the Temple. This is for wedding guests with mobility problems, and drops people off in a turning area approximately three minutes walk from the Temple along a level gravel path. It has capacity for seven people, or five people and one person in a wheelchair.
A stair climber is available to transport wheelchairs up Apollo's steps. All accessibility issues must be raised and discussed with Stourhead staff during your initial appointment.
