Lundy celebrates 40th anniversary

In 2009, Lundy celebrates its 40th anniversary under National Trust ownership and Landmark Trust management, who together have cared for this special place since its acquisition in 1969.

The small island in the Bristol Channel is known internationally for its incredible wildlife, ancient and modern history and captivating timeless atmosphere.

Peter Pearce, Director of the Landmark Trust, said:

'It is only thanks to our 40 year partnership with the National Trust that the many thousands of people from all walks of life who visit Lundy and stay there each year can still do so now. The Landmark Trust counts its work on Lundy as one of its greatest ever achievements. Lundy is one of those rare and magical places which influences peoples' lives far more than its tiny size would ever suggest. We pass this milestone with the island in better heart than ever, ready to greet and inspire its visitors for the next 40 years.'

Fiona Reynolds, Director-General of the National Trust, said:

'How can I describe Lundy? The images that spring to mind are almost all intensely personal – as a family we’ve spent a week on Lundy most Easters in the last seven years. Above all, thanks to the careful management of the Landmark Trust, it has the most amazing atmosphere.

Its sheer cliffs and springy turf, wild winds and shady suntraps, characterful houses, the Oldenburg and the friendly pub and shop all add up to an essence that is Lundy. Two spoonfuls to be taken before bedtime and you feel you will never be ill again.'

In 40 years, much has changed as the waters around Lundy have been designated the UK’s first No Take Zone and the island has gone green with its own recycling plant, but the beauty and atmosphere of the place remains refreshingly unchanged.
