    • The most wooded valley in the Lake District; the Atlantic Oak woodland is internationally recognised
    • Steeped in mining history
    • Brandelhow Park was the first piece of land in the Lake District to be acquired by the National Trust
    • Beautiful traditionally farmed upland landscape
    • Great accessibility around the lakeshore
    • This dramatic landscape has been sculpted by its extreme climate

    What's new this year
The Derwent Water Foreshore Project is working to improve access and presentation of the urban foreshore on the edge of Keswick. A recycled plastic boardwalk is currently being installed around the southern end of Derwent Water and will provide better access, while helping to protect the natural environment in the area.

    Watendlath and Surprise View
Fold Head Farm is a family run sheep and beef farm now offering bed and breakfast in the picturesque hamlet of Watendlath.
Watendlath is an isolated hamlet located high above the main Borrowdale valley. Set in a farmed landscape, it has changed little since the medieval period and has strong links to writer's of the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Sir Hugh Walpole and Edmund Casson. NY276163

    Brandelhow
This beautiful parkland landscape was the first piece of land in the Lake District to be purchased by the National Trust and provides tranquil walks around the water's edge, with spectacular views of Skiddaw and Blencathra. NY254206
The landing stage at Hawse End (Brandelhow Park), standing out starkly in the dawn light.
    Derwent Water
The east shore of Derwentwater, looking south to Castle Crag and the "Jaws of Borrowdale", on a sunny summers day, Cumbria.
Surrounded by mountains, dotted with islands and fringed with rare Atlantic Oak woodlands, Derwent Water is stunning. Derwent Isle is crowned with a Georgian mansion and the island and house are open to the public on set days each year. NY263223
    Force Crag Mine
The last mineral mine to operate in the Lake District. It was mined for lead from 1839 until 1865 and was eventually abandoned in 1991. The processing mill is open to the public and contains a unique collection of mining machinery. NY199217

    Castlerigg Stone Circle
Derwentwater, Lake District, Cumbria, Castlerigg Stone Circle, with Clough Head beyond, snow covered. Free standing megalithic stone circle of 38 stones, approx 100ft in diameter.
A striking Neolithic stone circle situated on the outskirts of Keswick and surrounded by magnificent lakeland fells. Why not take a pleasant walk back in time from Keswick town centre; parking is very limited at the site. NY292237
