The National Trust welcomes visitors who travel by bicycle.
Cycling is a healthy, enjoyable and environmentally friendly way to visit our properties, and we are working with partners such as Sustrans and the Countryside Agency to make it easier for more people to explore beautiful parts of the countryside in this way.
The majority of Trust properties are easily accessible by bike, with many now linked to the National Cycle Network. Most properties have cycle parking on site or nearby, unless stated otherwise.
A link to a map of cycle routes in the area is held in each property's individual webpages. Just click on the ‘Local cycle routes’ link and you will bring up a property centred map on the National Cycle Network website.
Look out for the bicycle icon in the property information to see which properties have cycle routes.
Sustrans Sustrans – the sustainable transport charity – works on practical projects to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic and its adverse effects.
As well as the National Cycle Network, Sustrans is working on Safe Routes to Schools, Home Zones and other practical responses to the transport and environmental challenges we face. Sustrans’ work relies on the generous donations and monthly standing orders of 40,000 Supporters, and the support of charitable trusts, companies, the National Lottery and local authority programmes.
The National Cycle Network The National Cycle Network is a comprehensive network of safe and attractive places to cycle throughout the UK.
The 10,000 mile National Cycle Network was officially opened in September 2005. A third of this network is completely traffic free, along riversides and through parks, following old railway lines and canal towpaths while the remainder is on quiet roads and minor roads.
A leaflet of over 140 National Trust and National Trust for Scotland properties nearest the network.. Produced by Sustrans, the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland, it is available at properties.
