1. Make sure that you can control your horse in open countryside before venturing out
2. Check the good condition of bridle and saddle.
3. Consider attaching a tag with an address/phone number to both saddle and bridle in case you accidentally part company with your horse during your ride.
4. Inform your friends or family about the details of your intended route.
5. Always wear an approved safety helmet.
6. Children should be supervised at all times.
7. Try to avoid having to ride in fog or darkness particularly across land you are unfamiliar with, and wear reflective clothing.
8. Be careful when riding on roads. Make sure that you can control your horse in traffic, and, in a group, ride in single file on the left side of the road. Keep to grass verges where possible.
9. When crossing roads make sure they are safe, and give a clear arm signal when turning off the road.
10. When riding across open land be careful on boggy, slippery or uneven ground
