'Society cannot ignore climate change – its impacts are being felt
already and they will become much more widespread.'
- Dame Fiona Reynolds DBE, Director General of the National
Trust
Climate change has implications for just about everything the
National Trust does.
The new threat it poses to our historic buildings, gardens, and extensive countryside
properties mirror impacts that will be felt right across society and the economy.
We are in the process of learning how to respond to these challenges – and we want
to share our journey with our visitors, members and the public.
How climate change is already affecting us
Managing our properties is giving us a good insight into how the changing climate
is already impacting on our environment, but also on what may be needed to adapt to that change.
'Climate change is a here and now issue and we need to adapt to
it fast.'
- Dame Fiona Reynolds DBE
The
causes of climate change need urgent action
And we need to do all we can to limit the ways in which our own resource use contributes
to the problem. There is a range of measures that we have taken to promote more responsible resource
use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We
are also calling on the Government to deliver a robust and targeted climate change adaptation strategy
for the UK to help people and businesses reduce the risks from climate change, as well as lobbying for
a comprehensive approach to reducing emissions.
