You can help your garden to help you and help the planet.
Have you adopted a plot?
At Souter Lighthouse local schools and community groups are being encouraged to ‘adopt a plot’. They are growing their own herbs and vegetables in Souter’s kitchen garden.
Small Steps, Big Change has helped to support the project. Souter staff have developed the garden and made the plots more accessible. It now has wide level paths and raised beds.
Souter staff are working closely with local schools, helping the children to:
- Find out that growing food is fun!
- Grow and cook their own food.
- Understand the importance of healthy eating.
Is your garden good to eat ?
The beautiful walled garden at Hughenden Manor is as much about people as about plants. It is becoming a learning garden, where people come in, take part and change the way the garden looks. The garden is starting to change their visitor’s attitudes, values and behaviour to food.
Small Steps, Big Change is supporting the project to run:
- ‘Veg of the Month’ project; giving out seeds and information on how to grow, harvest and cook a different vegetable each month.
- hands-on planting activities for families.
- Workshops for individuals on how to grow your own vegetables.
- Projects to grow vegetables with local community groups.
- Special restaurant dishes using a 'harvest of the month' vegetable.
