The National Trust owns more than 4,000 houses and cottages that are let for people to live in as their home. The types of property vary considerably, from small terraced cottages or flats converted from farm buildings, to modest period homes, some of which may be open to the public.
As a charity the Trust is obliged to make best use of its assets in terms of generating income, therefore its properties are generally let at open market rents to help it meet financial responsibilities.
Many Trust houses and cottages are of historic or architectural interest and may not provide all the conveniences of modern living. Sometimes the tenancy will include restrictions on how the property is used in order to safeguard its special qualities. The Trust accepts tenants who are sympathetic to the character of each property, especially where it is an ancient building or in a particularly remote location.
Vacant properties arise occasionally and lettings are either dealt with and advertised locally, and although there is no national list of available properties, people interested in renting a house or cottage can contact the local Trust office (Contact details for regional offices are also available by calling 0844 800 1895).
Some National Trust residential rental properties are also advertised on the internet via Rightmove:
