Ten Case Studies (2003) by Chris Appleton
The National Trust manages a large number of buildings. After sample surveys, all
are assumed to have bats. At any one time about a quarter of the buildings are undergoing some form
of repair, maintenance, part-renewal or change of use. All of these alterations are likely to affect
roosting bats.
This study looks at 10 cases where bats were known to be present, building works
occurred and the results monitored afterwards. The cases cover a geographical spread across National
Trust regions. Properties include Avebury, Berwick Wharf, Fountains Hall, Fountains Cellarium, Polesden
Lacey, Killerton, West Wantage, Igtham Mote, Stackpole, and Lodge Park. A variety of bat species were
involved.
