The National Trust is the largest and most important landowner for butterflies and moths in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
All the resident species of British butterflies (bar two) occur on Trust land and the Trust has huge responsibility towards seven of the 11 species in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
Butterflies
Particular efforts are made for the Large Blue, High Brown Fritillary and the Heath Fritillary butterflies; all three are fully protected species. The Trust also has big holdings of Silver Spotted Skipper and Adonis Blue butterflies.
Moths
The Trust has a responsibility to care for moths too, such as the rare Netted Carpet Moth, another UK BAP species.
The National Trust works closely with Butterfly Conservation, the charity dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and moths and their habitats.
