Trees dominate the grounds of Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire. Ancient specimens of English oak, sweet chestnut, green and purple beech, hornbeam and others, reveal their years through girth and spread.
The 'Great Plane' (Platanus x acerifolia) is reputed to be the largest of its kind in the country, with branches covering an area of some 1,500m².
The National Trust at Mottisfont Abbey holds the National Plant Collection of several forms of Platanus.
