What are the objectives of the Travel Fellowship?
The objectives of the Travel Fellowship are to:
- give young adults the opportunity to develop their personal experience and knowledge of other cultures through guided comparative research
- provide a research resource for us
- further demonstrate our capacity to provide inspirational learning opportunities
Over the last 16 years, the Fellowship has enabled over 40 young people to research and produce a comparative study between National Trust properties and sites in other European countries.
Topics for research have compared UK experience with, for example, community conservation in Iceland, modern Finnish architecture, heritage management in Italy, Czech medieval castles, and gardens in the Netherlands.
What is the purpose of the Travel Fellowship?
The programme introduces new people from all walks of life to us and, under the guidance of an in-house mentor, uses their research skills to look into issues that are relevant to us both now and in the future.
Fellows are given a £2,000 bursary which covers all research and travel costs, mentors are provided free of charge.

What benefit can these Fellowships offer to us?
As well as the useful recommendations that come out of the research, there are further benefits.
The scheme offers a chance to work with other like-minded organisations and individuals; the mentoring system is challenging and develops the management skills of Trust-based staff; several Fellows have gone on to work for us. It can be a cost-effective way of gaining valuable research.
