Glassware and ceramics are fragile and were often accidentally broken. Previous repair materials have frequently deteriorated, leaving the objects disfigured and likely to fall apart. They have to be repaired again, using modern adhesives.
Early repair materials often deteriorate faster than brittle but durable artefacts, leaving them disfigured and vulnerable to structural collapse. Modern water-clear epoxy resins enable new repairs to be carried out more sympathetically, allowing visitors to enjoy the artist’s or potter’s original intentions.
House staff are trained to recognise damaged and unstable ceramics and glass, to handle, clean and display them safely.
Stained glass is most commonly damaged by extremes of climate and by atmospheric pollution. Once conserved, therefore, windows are often protected from harmful outside conditions by external secondary glazing.
