The family archives of former inhabitants of National Trust properties form an important part of our collections.
The National Trust’s policy is to place family and other archives on permanent deposit with the relevant County Record Office, or other appropriate place, thus allowing for public access.
The Trust has deposited archives of outstanding importance, such as the Bankes papers from Kingston Lacy, now in Dorchester, the Disraeli papers from Hughenden Manor in the Bodleian Library, George Bernard Shaw’s papers from Shaw’s Corner in Cambridge University Library and the Carlyle papers from Carlyle's House in the National Library of Scotland.
