Many of the National Trust’s houses contain items of costume, often robes of state or uniforms.
Charles Wade, the donor of Snowshill Manor in Gloucestershire, made an important collection of English 18th-century costume. Through lack of space at Snowshill it is housed at Berrington Hall in Herefordshire.
Springhill in Northern Ireland and Killerton in Devon both contain collections of costume to which suitable additions are made by gift and occasional purchase. The collections are shown on rotation or to students by appointment.
There is a collection of the 19th and early 20th century actress Ellen Terry’s theatrical costumes at her former home, Smallhythe Place in Kent.
