The idea of life in a workhouse conjures up images of a grim existence but now a dedicated band of storytellers from The Workhouse are visiting venues across Nottinghamshire to tell their stories of what life was like for some during the hard times in the Victorian era.
The group have been telling stories at The Workhouse since it opened in 2002 at annual events, but this is the first time the stories have been taken out to the community.
The Workhouse Learning Officer, Heather Whitworth, said:
'The stories from The Workhouse take a look at the people who lived there and how the building changed their lives. All the stories are taken from The Workhouse records and are based on real people.'
The story telling sessions will take place at libraries in Nottinghamshire, at Community Centres and also at the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham.
