The National Trust in the East of Engladn is offering local, seasonal food at its finest from 20 September to 5 October 2008. Here is a taster of what's on
Bedfordshire
Chilterns Gateway Centre – Food & Drink Festival from 30 September to 5 October, including a farmers market, picnic, hog roast and music. On Friday 3 October The National Trust Food Day will feature all things Giant! With a giant Clanger and giant Scone from Gunn’s Bakery in Sandy.
Cambridgeshire
Anglesey Abbey – Old favourites feature on the menu, from steak and kidney pudding and shepherd’s pie to roast lamb, toad in the hole and stew and dumplings.
Houghton Mill – Savour the Houghton Victoria Plum Cake, made using plums from Pam’s garden and flour from the Mill, to a recipe created by Kathy. Pam and Kathy work at Houghton Mill!
Peckover House – Seasonal scones are on the menu, from apple and cinnamon, to pear or tomato and basil.
Wicken Fen – Try Fen Soup, a Fen 'Dochey' Lunch (that’s a ploughman’s!), followed by Lode Lane Apple Pie. On Sunday 21 September, join the local barbecue featuring Wicken Long Horn burgers and sausages, Fen Eel tasting, and a farmers market selling local fruit and veg.
Wimpole Hall – As well as a special seasonal menu, Elveden Estate product tastings will take place from 20 to 24 September. During Wimpole at War on 27 and 28 September, ration book Woolton Pie is on the menu, among other WWII food.
Norfolk
Blickling – Tickle your tastebuds with Groveland’s traditional pork and leek sausages with rich onion gravy, or rabbit and pigeon casserole with herb cobbler. Follow that with pear and apple frangipane if you have room!
Felbrigg – Savour the tastes of autumn with mushroom soup served with Norfolk Dapple toasts. Follow that with leg of lamb served with rosemary gravy, honey and mustard dressed root veg and roast potatoes. Round it all off with raspberry and apple crumble and custard, or chocolate and blackberry trifle. Check out Felbrigg Hall at Harvest, decorated with flowers, fruit and vegetables from the walled garden from 4 to 8 October.
Oxburgh – Stews and casseroles of local ingredients feature on the menu, and traditional steamed apple pudding, orchard plum tart and mouthwatering bread and butter pudding.
Sheringham Park – Test your knowledge with Sheringham’s quiz about traditional, seasonal, local food. Warm yourself up while you’re doing it with homemade leek and potato soup, or treat yourself to fruit scones with local jam.
Suffolk
Dunwich Heath – British food will be on the menu, with recipes old and new. On Wednesday 24 September, is Dunwich Heath’s Souper Day, part of the Aldeburgh Food & Drink Festival. Try homemade soups and even take the recipes home with you.
Flatford – Enjoy a Ploughman’s lunch featuring local cheese, making sure you leave space for apple pie using local Bramleys and homemade custard.
Sutton Hoo –Check out the British Food Celebration dish of the day. There will also be a local producers’ market, blindfold food taste tests, and children’s activities including biscuit decoration.
