On Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 October between 10am and 4pm, Ickworth will be hosting one of the highlights of this year’s events calendar; the 19th annual Wood Sale and Craft Fair.
Last year saw over 6,000 people attend this spectacular two day event in the grounds of one of the regions most beautiful country houses - Ickworth House, where woodcraft professionals and enthusiasts come from all over the country to demonstrate and sell their crafts.
For the food and drink enthusiasts there will be lots of local produce to enjoy throughout the day, including locally brewed beer and ale from St Peter's Brewery and wine from Ickworth's very own vineyard,as well as home-made fudge, pickles, ice cream and waffles.
Some of the highlights to be sure to see this year are - the Steam Train driving a huge saw mill, timber hewing, home-made Windsor Chairs. There will also be Birds of Prey displays and the Rede Hall Suffolk Punch Horse will be carting logs for the event. Some of the more unusual attractions this year include Didgeridoos and Yurts.
This year sees the Wood Sale and Craft Fair move in new directions with the addition of a dedicated Pottery Marquee, where the Anglian Pottery Society will be selling their crafts and carrying out regular demonstrations of Raku firing. This involves heating the clay in a kiln until it is red hot and then throwing it into sawdust, which creates amazing and unusual effects and colours on the pottery.
With well over 100 attractions, this year’s fair is set to be the biggest one yet. With everything from chainsaw sculptures to sustainable African crafts, Didgeridoos to camping and outdoor supplies, there's sure to be something for everyone.
This fair is known throughout the region as one of the best resources for local wood and crafts, and provides a rare opportunity to buy quality wood from the Ickworth estate, including native and exotic species, milled and in the round.
There are lots of activities for the younger members of the family as well, with a children's longbow workshop and plenty of fun craft activities to get involved with. Live music will be performed by Wood Fair favourites The Floozies, who will be playing a popular selection of folk music, and BOFF who specialise in traditional music from the continent.
