School children from Petersfield School, Orwell, harvested their own potatoes at Wimpole Home Farm, which they took back to the school for cooking in the school kitchens.
In April the whole school came to Wimpole and planted potatoes. By mid July the potatoes were ready to harvest and the children walked to Wimpole through the woods to harvest their potatoes, to show them how local food can be. The children were taken back to school after the potato harvest, by tractor and trailer!
Heather Polge, Wimpole Learning Officer, said:
'Being able to walk to Wimpole to harvest their potatoes really brought home how locally produced their potatoes were. Some of the children were really enthusiastic and counted the potatoes as they harvested them from each plant. The maximum from one of the plants was 23 new potatoes!'
The potatoes were used for a World Food cooking day, to highlight local and seasonal food, in the school kitchens for dinners and were alsoshown at a local village fete where they won a prize.
