Natalie Simpson has been appointed as custodian at Paycocke’s, the stunning Gothic merchant’s house in Coggeshall.
This is a radical change for the previously tenanted National Trust house which will mean more access and enjoyment for visitors.
Paycocke’s has always been looked after and opened to the public by tenants. But that will all change now Natalie has moved in. Property Manager for Essex and South Suffolk, Martin Atkinson, explains:
'Natalie’s appointment as custodian for Paycocke's is a big step forward and will enable us to start putting into action our plans for opening up more rooms of the house for visitors to enjoy.
'There are great opportunities to share more of the story of Paycocke’s and to help our visitors understand the importance of the house and its part in the wealth of the area generated by the 15th and 16th-century wool trade.'
Martin continues:
'Natalie comes to the National Trust with a Masters degree in Landscape History, and a passion for historical research which she plans to put to good use in filling in the gaps in our knowledge of Paycocke’s history.'
Having spent two years working for the Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service in places like Norwich Castle and Strangers Hall, Natalie is well experienced in bringing places to life with guided tours, costumed interpretation and classroom activities.
Natalie said:
'I’m overwhelmed to have got the job, and now two weeks in, very excited about developing the house and garden and making it more of a tourist attraction than it is.
'We had a great Easter weekend with lots of visitors, but in some ways Paycocke’s is a blank canvas and I look forward to making a difference here.
'The lovely peaceful cottage garden is a great starting point, and I would be lost without the three fantastic garden volunteers. Getting the local community involved is vital.
'We would like to restore the garden, so need help with researching its history as well as doing the actual gardening.
'We are also in need of assistance inside the house, helping to welcome visitors through the door and open up additional rooms. If you’re interested in playing a part in the future of Paycocke’s, I would love to hear from you.'
