The Biodiversity Data Project is being carried out by the Northern Ireland Conservation Directorate. The aim of the project is to identify and understand the extent and distribution of priority habitats and species in the National Trusts care by undertaking a biodiversity audit and compiling a biodiversity database. This will be achieved through the following steps:
- Completion of digital map database of biodiversity features on NI Trust properties
- Purchase of aerial photographs, soil and geology data and put onto NT database
- Setting up Recorder 2000 at regional office to collate all property species records
- Presentation of reports and exchange of information using existing data sources (EHS, CEDaR and the National Biodiversity Network)
- Sharing of information with EHS and other key partners
Although a lot of nature conservation and biodiversity information has been gathered on National Trust properties in the past, data has often been lacking in consistency or is simply outdated. The most important existing sources of biodiversity information on NT properties are the Biological Survey Reports. Although most of the surveys were carried out in the early 1990s they still contain very valuable information but have major limiting factors. With the increasing responsibility on the National Trust, as a result of the Government White paper, to appropriately manage and enhance the rich nature conservation resource under its control, the completion of a comprehensive and structured biodiversity database is essential. The completion of this database, together with the presentation of its findings into a manageable digitised format, will greatly contribute to the NI Biodiversity Strategy targets and assist the National Trust and other partner organisations in developing its education and interpretation programmes. These in turn will be effective in enhancing the appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of biodiversity at local National Trust properties and re-enforcing the important guardianship role that the organisation plays throughout the Province.
The Biodiversity Data Management Project is partially funded by EHS.
